Cybersecurity and Networking Certifications

Computer careers include everything from chief information officers to technical writers. There are many technical career options that can be pursued in the field of IT. These include server hardware, operating system, virtualization, security and help desk support. You can also work as a business analyst, which helps you determine the best way to meet business needs. There are also certification programs.

Occupational Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, security analysts, web developers, and network architects are occupations that have above-average job prospects. They are expected to grow 22 percent between 2010-20 2020, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These positions paid an average of $81,000 in 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Robert Half International expects 2013 earnings to be close to $54,000 for an entry-level web designer and almost $150,000 for a network architect. CIO.com also identified project management as a high-demand information technology field with starting salaries exceeding $79,000.

Education and experience are prerequisites

Bachelor’s degrees are required for security analysts, network architects, and web developers. For positions in security or architecture, you will need to have previous experience in similar occupations. As they work with stakeholders to align technology and business needs, architects need to have a good understanding of applications and infrastructure. While certifications are useful for architects and security professionals, they are not required for web development positions. Web developers should instead have experience with web programming languages.

Security Certification

The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC2) sets the standard in security with its credential of Certified Information Security Professional (CISSP). The exam takes six hours and costs $599 in the United States. Non-affiliated training providers can also offer classes to prepare for the exam. Learning Tree International offers a five day course at a cost of $2950. The “Official Guide to the CISSP” is a valuable study tool, available in print form through the (ISC). Each three-year renewal of certification requires 120 continuing professional education credits. Annually, an $85 fee will be charged.

Architecture Certification

Although Cisco offers certification in architecture, the Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) is a globally recognized and vendor-neutral alternative. At an average cost of $400, certification applicants must pass an exam that tests their knowledge and understanding about the architecture framework. Self-study is an option. For formal training, it is not necessary. Training should be done through a TOGAF-accredited training partner like Capgemini which offers a five day course for around $3,900.
